Adult literacy training is one very important part of the United States effort to provide its citizens with the skills necessary to became produtive members of the work force. Many programs operated by schools and libraries across the country include courses designed to teach adults how to improve their reading and writing skills. In 1989, the First lady, Mrs. Barbara Bush, became head of a national campaing against illiteracy.
